LOWELL -- A full house is expected in the Council Chamber Monday morning as the members of the 2010-2011 City Council and School Committee are sworn-in.

Three new councilors: Franky Descoteaux, Joe Mendonca and Patrick Murphy will take the oath of office alongside veteran councilors Kevin Broderick, Edward "Bud" Caulfield, Rodney Elliott, Bill Martin, Rita Mercier and Jim Milinazzo.

The three rookies are filling the seats left vacant by Alan Kazanjian, Mike Lenzi and Armand Mercier. Lenzi chose not to run for re-election following his freshman term on the council; Kazanjian and Mercier both lost their re-election campaigns in November.

City Clerk Rick Johnson said dignitaries including the councilors, several former mayors, the city's police and fire chiefs, and members of the Statehouse delegation will meet in the Mayor's Reception Room at 9:45 a.m. and proceed into the chamber where Lowell District Court Judge Paul Chernoff will administer the oath of office.

The councilors will then vote to elect a new mayor. All indications are that Milinazzo has secured the votes required to secure the position. It is also expected that Broderick will be tapped to serve as the council's vice chairman.

Upon his selection, Milinazzo will give a speech.

Rev. James Taggart, of St. Patrick's Church, will be on hand to give the invocation and benediction.

The School Committee will be sworn in following the council ceremony.

Newcomer Alison Laraba will join committee members Dave Conway, Jackie Doherty, Jim Leary, John Leahy and Connie Martin. Laraba fills the seat that was held for 24 years by Regina Faticanti, who lost her bid for re-election in November.

(Admin. note)
Well, I guess we'll have to keep a keen eye on these newcomers to see how they handle the Centraville problems. Joe Mendonca is the only one, so far to show an interest in this section of the city, so stay tuned!!
